The Procedure
Hip replacement involves the removal and replacement of portions of the pelvis and femur (thighbone) that form your hip joint. It is performed primarily to relieve hip pain and stiffness caused by hip arthritis or injuries. During hip replacement, damaged sections of your hip joint are removed and replaced with metal or ceramic pieces. This artificial joint (prosthesis) helps reduce pain and improve function.
Dr. Mangino prefers to utilize the direct lateral or anterolateral approach in performing hip replacements, and works with Johnson & Johnson supplied prosthetics.

Recovery from Total Hip Replacement
Most patients will begin walking the day of the surgery with the help of a walker and physiotherapy. Pain is controlled with prescribed medications.
Generally, the sutures will be removed 2 weeks after surgery. Prior to that, patients should have already started the physical therapy, at home or at a specialized center. Most patients will be able to return to normal activities between 6 and 12 weeks after the procedure.
